Subaru to date has been unwilling to provide me with motors at a reasonable cost to make these kits affordable. I have a few available now. They are complete kits which includes everything need to remove the Kohler motor and replace it with the Subaru 36HP setup. It runs long and strong. Completely changes the tractor performance. A real boost when used with the snow blower. I have to get some updated photos and will edit this listing, currently these photos show the Generac engines. Check out the Video link on you tube at.. This is an old video and I still have the tractor and it is running fine still. Here is the original add listing from a few years ago. The John Deere 400 lawn tractor is a great piece of equipment. However, the original Kohler motor is prone to burning oil and breaking the right side piston rod. Both of these problems are expensive, happen at relatively low hours and tend to re-appear time and time again with even with the best rebuilding efforts. (We know, we tried many times with the best machine shops and parts and each time repeated failures some before 500 hours most before 1000 hours). What we offer is a solutions that not only eliminates these problems for good but also provides 160% of the original power while using less gas! We have provided many of these kits over the years and our customers are always very happy to finally have the tractor they always wanted. Because 20hp is barley enough for this tractor frame and it forces the 20-25 hp engines to work at their full output. It is much better to work a larger motor only 70% then to constantly be running at the engines maximum. This allows the big engine to run cooler which is one of the main reasons the engine life goes up by so much. Then on occasion when more power is indeed need you have it. Do it once and be done. It takes the same amount of effort to put in a ok engine as it does to put in a great engine, but with the great engine you will have the tractor you want and you won’t have to rebuild it again in three years. The attachments all work at the same speed as before but it’s just that the added torque that allows them to maintain speed when the job gets tough. This means more work with less effort in less time. When it comes to snow blowing when the snow gets deep the speed will stay high, the snow will get thrown just as far and the chute tends not to clog. For cutting grass the tall weeds while going uphill won’t require slowing down. For tilling the tractor stays moving one speed even in tough soils. This engine has a built in oil cooler just for the engine so it stays cooler. Air cooled engines run much hotter than the water cooled equivalents so if you want to get long life then keep it as cool as possible. The John Deere 400 fenders around the engine stop some of this air flow so good cooling is important in this application and an oil cooler keeps everything running cool for a long time. Also, we recommend converting early front exhaust tractors to side exhaust tractors. The side exhaust removes more heat from the engine area and is likely why John Deere changed the design in the later years. The conversion is easy and doesn’t add anything to the cost. The complete kit includes everything! I started doing some of the shores that I normally do…. I can’t believe it. I was need to cut wood and I usually hook on a pull it up to the house. There has been times that I either cut it down to a more manageable size or make it gut up the hill. I was pulling 25′-35′ tress with 10-12 base and it wasn’t even breathing. Bob We are by no means recommending that everyone tries to pull trees with a lawn tractor… But if that is what it takes to get the job done then this engine can do it.
